Learning Harmony With Nature

Location:
The project is located in Istanbul, Turkey. Istanbul has almost 15 million people, and reaching to nature is getting harder for children every day. The project site is abandoned green areas located in hearth of Istanbul. The neighbourhood built in 50s and called Etiler. Today, educated people live in this area, and they have difficulty sending their children to schools integrated with nature.
Concept:
This kindergarten is designed to nurture children's connection with nature at on early age and to help them grow as part of it. At the heart of the design lies on the environment where children can freely explore, grow their own food, and learn about the cycles of nature. Inspired by the Montessori philosophy, the design focuses on individual learning and independence, supported by a nature-centred pedagogical approach.
Multi Functional and Flexible Classrooms:
Flexible spatial design enables classrooms to be merged or separated with sliding doors, while modular furniture can be easily adopted for individual or group activities. The classrooms can be used as different activity areas and also serve as sleeping rooms.
Easy Nature Access:
Each classroom opens directly into the garden, allowing children to maintain on uninterrupted connection with the outdoors. Large windows, indoor plants, and outdoor learning spaces promote a connection with the natural world. The central courtyard serves as a hub for, social interaction and provides a safe play area. The edible garden located in front of each classroom offer children the opportunity to experience growing, caring for, and harvesting plants. The organically shaped landscape, enriched with agricultural zones and outdoor classrooms, encourages children to explore the natural world.
Wide Corridors:
The design eliminates the concept of traditional corridors, transformed transition areas into learning spaces, play areas, or gathering spaces.
Multipurpose Hall:
The multipurpose hall is easily accessible from the classrooms. It is designed as a flexible space that can be used for sports activities as well as various events, such as year-end shows and piano concerts. The stage is designed with a 360-degree view, allowing it to be open to visitors from outside
Sustainable Materials:
Built entirely with wooden materials, the structure offers a warm and natural atmosphere while embracing a sustainable architectural approach. Sustainability features such as a green roof, rainwater harvesting system, and solar panels demonstrate the building's environmentally conscious educational model.

This kindergarten is more than just an educational space; it is a foundation for instilling o lifestyle in harmony with nature. Flexible and independent spaces inspired by Montessori principles are combined with a design that prioritizes a connection to nature. This school serves as a nurturing environment for raising future individuals who are sensitive to the natural world.
